The Delhi High Court on Wednesday sought a response from Congress leader Sajjan Kumar on a plea seeking cancellation of the anticipatory bail granted to him by a trial court in connection with a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case in which members from the community were killed.
Justice I. S. Mehta issued a notice to Mr. Kumar on a plea by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) seeking cancellation of the the anticipatory bail given to him by the trial court on December 21 last.
Timings of FIRs
The court posted the matter for hearing on November 10. Earlier, two High Court judges had recused themselves from hearing in the matter. The court had on February 23 asked the SIT to inform it about the timings of each FIR lodged against Mr. Kumar in the case.
The timings of each FIR were sought as Mr. Kumar is an accused in several anti-Sikh riots cases, and the court had expressed concern over how a person can be involved in each of them.
The probe agency informed the court that 10 FIRs were registered in Delhi against the Congress leader after assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The SIT had on January 25 moved the court seeking cancellation of Mr. Kumar’s anticipatory bail.
While granting relief to the former MP on a personal bond of ₹1 lakh and a surety of the like amount, the trial court had asked him not to leave the country without permission.
