North Delhi streets will soon be lit with LED lights to overcome the problem of dark spots, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation announced on Friday.
Replacement process
The civic body’s project, which has been in the pipeline for several months now, will replace existing streetlights with LED ones. The replacement process will start from Monday.
North Delhi Mayor Preety Agarwal said of 2.05 lakh streetlights under the civic body, a contract has been awarded for 1.15 lakh lighting fixtures.
The project, she said, will start from Rohini and Narela, two of the bigger zones under the municipality.
Tenders have been received and evaluated for the remaining 90,000 lighting fixtures spread across four zones, she said.
‘Safety at night’
“Safety at night is a major issue. Many women have complained that areas around their houses are not lit properly and that they are afraid of going out after sundown due to safety concerns. LED lights are brighter that normal lights and will solve the problem of dark spots to a great extent,” said Ms. Agarwal.
She added that this will also ensure miscreants do not camp at public parks and roads after dark.
North body Commissioner P.K. Gupta said the fixtures have been designed according to the civic body’s specifications and will save at least 64.4% energy. The fixtures also have a guaranteed minimum lifespan of seven years.
“We expect to save around ₹50 crore per annum and ₹350 crore in seven years with this project,” Mr. Gupta said.
The Commissioner added that a central control monitoring systems would be installed in each zone to ensure perfect functionality of street lighting and its control.
