A 220 kV sub-station at the Indira Gandhi International Airport here was inaugurated by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday. It will supply power to Delhi airport, Delhi Metro railway and adjoining areas.
Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Dikshit said supplying power in Delhi was a very challenging task and the difference between maximum and minimum demand in a single day is around 20 per cent. Referring to the complexity of the demand-supply system, she said while at one point of day the city faces scarcity of power, at another there is surplus.
She said with the commissioning of the sub-station there will not be problems on the power front at the airport as the sub-station will provide dedicated power to it.
She said at present the load of IGI Airport was around 35 MW which is being met from the existing 220 kV sub-stations at Mehrauli and Vasant Kunj. However, the demand is expected to increase with the development of commercial complexes in and around the airport.
Officials of the Delhi Transco Limited (DTL) that has constructed the sub-station said the airport was being connected through high-speed metro services with New Delhi railway station, which will further increase the power demand. The new sub-station will ensure uninterrupted power supply to the airport.
Delhi Chief Secretary and DTL Chairman and Managing Director Rakesh Mehta said the sub-station had been constructed and commissioned in a short span of time. He said the land measuring 5,040 sq m had been provided by Delhi International Airport Limited.
