June 05, 2013 09:46 am | Updated 09:46 am IST - New Delhi:

The Government on Tuesday approved phase-I redevelopment of Safdarjung Hospital here, which will see the establishment of two separate building blocks — a 807-bed super-speciality-cum-paid-ward block and a 500-bed emergency block.

Both blocks will have ICU beds, said a statement after the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved the proposal. The cost of project execution will be Rs.1,332 crore, inclusive of Rs.165 crore towards expenses on operations for the first year.

The super-speciality-cum-paid-ward block will cater to cardiovascular, thoracic science, cardiology, cardiac surgery, endocrinology, neurosurgery, nephrology, neurology, etc., said the statement.

This block will have its own diagnostic and investigation facilities, some of which are proposed to be provided through the PPP mode, it added.

The emergency block, on the other hand, will cater primarily to orthopaedics, neurosurgery and general surgery.

It will also cater to emergency cases. It is proposed that diagnostic and investigation facilities will be provided by the hospital directly.

The estimated implementation time of the project is 47 months, inclusive of 12 months of commissioning, operationalisation and stabilisation phase, the statement said.
