The Delhi Chief Electoral Officer on Monday said there was no possibility of misuse of voters’ photo identity cards issued earlier for exercising their franchise during the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections.
“Duplicate images have been deleted and [electoral] rolls purified,” stated an affidavit filed by the CEO in the Delhi High Court on its directions in a case filed with the allegation that a large number of bogus voters were set to cast votes in the Assembly polls. Congress leader Naresh Kumar, who unsuccessfully contested the 2014 Assembly election from Mundka, has filed the writ petition.
‘Duplication’
Dr. Kumar claimed that the latest electoral rolls had pictures of same person against different names. The Court had on January 13 directed the CEO to clarify if the identity cards issued to voters in question also bear wrong photographs.
The affidavit pointed out that the voters’ cards were automatically generated for all registered electors upon enrolment in accordance with the instructions of the Election Commission.
In case of any discrepancy or missing photo from the electoral rolls, the voter has to produce a valid alternate photo identity document to establish his or her identity, said the CEO’s affidavit.
The Court posted the matter for hearing on March 3.
