The Delhi Police has intimated the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) about the death of four criminals in an encounter and also initiated other legal formalities, including a magisterial inquiry, into the case on Sunday.

The bodies have been kept at the AIIMS mortuary and will be handed over to their respective family members on Monday after the post-mortem.

The police said a case under sections of attempt to murder and attack on policemen has been registered at Fatehpur Beri police station in south Delhi.

Medical board, videos

They added that a medical board will be constituted and the post-mortem proceedings will be videographed.

“After completion of all the formalities, the post-mortem will be conducted on Monday. We have informed the family members of all the criminals who died in the encounter,” said Pramod Kushwaha, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell).

Bharti’s kin absent

“No one has come to claim the body of gangster Rajesh Bharti, while family members of Sanjeet Vidrohi, Umesh Don and Viresh Rana, who were shot dead in the encounter, have contacted the police. They have already reached AIIMS,” Mr. Kushwaha said.

Meanwhile, the police is trying to contact the relatives and distant family members of Rajesh Bharti.

A senior police officer who was the part of encounter said the entire situation was handled professionally.

He said the police had warned the gangsters and asked them to surrender but they opened fire at them.

“We zeroed in on them from three sides. A team in police car intercepted the gangsters and forced them to stop the SUV. At the same time, two other police teams positioned themselves on the left and right sides. One of the teams fired, while the other one lay on the ground and fired. This was done to avoid crossfire,” said the police officer.

Case registered

“A case has been registered and the matter will be investigated by other units of the Delhi Police, except the Special Cell which conducted the encounter,” the officer said.
