NHPC urged to withdraw regulation of power

June 23, 2012 09:45 am | Updated 02:19 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

Power distribution company BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) on Friday said National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) has stopped the supply of 150 MW of power to the company despite having been paid their due.

In a statement issued here, BRPL said NHPC has regulated supply since Thursday night, despite compliance of the agreement signed between the two. “BRPL signed an agreement with NHPC in April 2012 for liquidation of outstanding dues. BRPL has complied with all terms of the agreement, while current dues have been paid on time; there was a delay of 20 days in payment of agreed instalment of arrears for May, which had been duly communicated to NHPC.

Payment against this was also made two days ago. Despite this, NHPC decided to proceed with the regulation of power supply (with effect from midnight of June 21). This insistence of depriving Delhi of power supply, despite all terms of the agreement have been met is difficult to understand and will inconvenience the consumers in the Capital, considering how Delhi’s peak load is growing day-by-day," said a spokesperson.

The discom official said attempts to normalise the situation have been initiated. “We have once again requested NHPC to take a more pragmatic view of the situation and withdraw regulation of power. The discoms across the country work under a regulated tariff regime, which, however have not been cost reflective, resulting in a depleted ability to clear dues for purchase of power. This has further hampered investments for improvement of the network,” the spokesperson said.
