The driver of the MCD truck that rammed an SUV on National Highway 24 early on Wednesday morning has been arrested. The 19-year-old, Nitesh Kumar, was nabbed near Akshardham.

Four members of a family and the driver of the car, a friend of the victims, were killed after the truck jumped over a divider and landed on the bonnet of the SUV on the other side of the road.

Tried to mislead cops

During interrogation, Nitesh allegedly tried to mislead the police by claiming that he was 16 years old. His Aadhaar card, however, established that he was 19 years old.

‘Lost control’

Nitesh claimed to have lost control on the day of the incident. “He doesn’t seem like a trained driver. He was coming from the Ghazipur landfill after dumping debris. It is yet to be confirmed whether he was drunk or sleepy,” a senior police said.

Father helped

A resident of the jhuggis near Akshardham, Nitesh was apprehended after his father helped the police, said a senior officer. “He didn’t go home after the incident. He was roaming around and meeting friends. His father told us that he wasn’t coming home,” the officer added.

The police said that they received a tip-off saying that Nitesh would meet his father on Friday evening. “He was going to meet his family in the evening. We nabbed him before he could reach,” said the officer.
