With the National Green Tribunal acting tough on those failing to curb vehicular pollution in Delhi, municipal corporations were on Wednesday directed to finally demarcate single lane for parking in Lajpat Nagar and Karol Bagh. They were also asked to put jersey barriers wherever needed to check irregular traffic movement.
The Tribunal also ordered checking of traffic and resultant pollution in South Extension and Nehru Place
A Bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar was also informed by the traffic police about seven locations identified in Karol Bagh for parking.
Advocate D. Rajeshwar Rao, appearing for the traffic police, informed the Bench that the police, corporations and the traders’ association surveyed the area and have identified places for parking. He also suggested banning traders and shopkeepers from parking their vehicles in front of their shops.
At this, the NGT directed “the Secretary, PWD, NCT Delhi, would call for a meeting immediately wherein the Joint Commissioner (Traffic), the Commissioner North MCD, Officers of the PWD, DDA, CPWD and the market federation would be present and examine the proposal prepared by the traffic police for meeting the congestion of the traffic in Karol Bagh resulting in serious air pollution.”
“We are informed that the Corporation is proposing to build a multi-level car parking at Shashtri Park. The Committee may also examine if there is any other space available where multi-level car parking could be built,” it said.
Meanwhile, PWD submitted that they would complete all work line demarcating single lane for parking and putting jersey barriers by Tuesday. Anyone parking beyond the single lane would be liable to pay Rs.1,000 as per NGT order.
