The National Green Tribunal on Tuesday directed the deployment of traffic police in Sarojini Nagar Market, to ensure that directions pertaining to parking are complied with.

A Bench headed by NGT chairperson Swatanter Kumar passed the directions after the counsel for the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) submitted that the authorities were facing resistance from the market association.

Multi-level parking

On November 17, the green panel had rejected a plea by the shopkeepers and banned the parking of cars on roads surrounding the Sarojini Nagar Market.

“We find this request not only opposed to environment protection but without any substance as well. The shop owners as well as the customers coming to the market are parking their cars on the roads, causing heavy traffic congestion,” the Bench had observed.

Multi-level parking

Directing authorities to ensure that cars are parked at the multi-level parking, theNGT had said that an environmental compensation of ₹5,000 would be imposed on those who violated the order.
