Every drop counts, the Capital’s water utility admits. And now, after years of experiencing transmission and distribution losses, the Delhi Jal Board is getting ready to plug leakages in its network.
The DJB has started creating district metering areas (DMAs), zones of 500 to 2,500 connections each where the amount of water at the entry and exit points will be monitored by flow metres and gauges will keep a check on pressure levels.
Water accounting with these zones will be the first step in checking losses, which DJB officials say varies from 20 to 11 per cent depending on the area.
DJB CEO Vijay Kumar said on Tuesday that the boundaries of these zones had been drawn, inlets and outlets have been identified and the number of pressure gauges needed has been calculated.
“We are beginning to procure the flow metres and pressure gauges. By March 2015, we will have 44 DMAs, two in each division, in place,” said Mr. Kumar.
The executive engineer of the division will monitor the data, which will be cross-referenced with the amount of collections from the area. Two more DMAs will be set up in the command areas of the Haiderpur and Chandrawal water treatment plants. The entire network of these command areas will be installed with pressure gauges and the condition of pipes will be checked to prevent contamination.
