New Mayor takes over

April 29, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - NEW DELHI:

A new Mayor and Deputy Mayor took charge in the North Delhi Municipal Corporation on Thursday, with the ruling-BJP’s candidates being elected unopposed.

Dr. Sanjeev Nayyar, BJP councillor from Paschim Vihar, became the Mayor of the North Corporation, while BJP councillor from Rohini Tara Chand Bansal was elected Deputy Mayor.

Dr. Nayyar, who was a member of the Standing Committee, said that his priority would be advancing the Swachh Bharat Mission.

The second-term councillor said that making North Delhi free of mosquitoes and stray dogs would also be part of his plan.

The North Corporation has been undergoing a severe financial crisis for years now. Dr. Nayyar said that he would work towards increasing revenue, and a sector-wise advertising policy would be put in place.

Also on Thursday, three members were elected to the Standing Committee. BJP councillors Vijay Prakash Pandey and Neelam Buddhiraja, and Congress councillor Prithvi Singh Rathore were elected to the Standing Committee.

Though the elections were unanimous as the Opposition Congress had not filed nominations, MPs Meenakshi Lekhi and Udit Raj were present.
