Doctors at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences here have successfully performed a new generation cochlear implant surgery on a hearing impaired child.

The three-and-a-half-year-old child was implanted with a modern state-of-the-art fifth generation cochlear implant. “This is device called Nucleus 5 from Australia and is a breakthrough in cochlear implant design and new technology. It is thinner and tougher than the previous models and provides advantages of better speech understanding and thereby quality learning,” said associate professor at the Institute Dr. Rakesh Kumar.

AIIMS director Dr. R.C. Deka said: “We have conducted this surgery successfully for the first time in India. With 320 implantations so far, AIIMS has performed largest number of such surgeries in India.”
