The opening of the Maharana Pratap flyover and an underpass at Rajiv Chowk, both part of multi-crore National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) projects underway at four major intersections of the Millennium City, are expected to ease traffic flow in Gurugram.

The flyover, which was slated to be completed by June-end, was finally inaugurated on Monday.

Built at a cost of ₹34 crore, the flyover on the Mehrauli-Gurugram Road is expected to ease traffic flow on the stretch connecting IFFCO Chowk to the City Bus Stand.

The stretch, which passes through Sukhrali village, has seen an increase in traffic due to the bus stand and a prominent management institute near the Maharana Pratap intersection.

“The intersection witnessed heavy traffic throughout the day due to movement of buses and big trucks from an automobile company on Old Delhi-Gurugram Road. We can now hope for some respite,” said Ramesh, a resident of Sukhrali.

Similarly, the ₹30 crore underpass at Rajiv Chowk will facilitate U-turn for vehicles coming from Medanta Hospital to Delhi. It is expected to reduce vehicular traffic at one of the busiest intersections on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway.

Mega project

The two projects are part of a ₹1,000-crore project for construction of flyovers and underpasses at four major intersections in the city: IFFCO Chowk, Signature Tower, Maharana Pratap Chowk and Rajiv Chowk.

Launched in September last year, the mega project is expected to be completed by March 2018. The project is expected to ease traffic flow on Delhi-Gurugram Expressway and also improve connectivity between old and new Gurugram.

As per the plan, two four-lane unidirectional flyovers and a four-lane flyover are proposed at IFFCO Chowk. Similarly, an underpass each is to be constructed at Signature Tower and Rajiv Chowk intersections.

Inaugurating the two projects on Monday, Union Minister for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Nitin Gadkari also laid the foundation stone for a six-km-long elevated corridor on Sohna Road, from Subhash Chowk to Badshapur village.

He also kicked off a project for the improvement of a T-junction near Dhaula Kuan metro station.

The Minister said that construction of IMT Chowk flyover at Manesar would be completed by December this year. He added that the Kherki Daula toll plaza would be shifted eight km towards Manesar within three months after land is provided by the State.

Mr. Gadkari said that the proposal to construct a highway between Delhi and Katra at the cost of ₹40,000 crore was under discussion and a major portion of this road would pass through Haryana.

He said that the proposed road would create business opportunities and employment opportunities for the youth.
