NDMC official gets 3 years in jail

A Delhi court has sentenced a senior assistant in the Estate Office of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) to three years of rigorous imprisonment in a corruption case of 2012.

Special Judge for the CBI cases, Gurdeep Singh, sentenced accused Arjun Singh, holding him guilty of demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs.10,000 from a shop owner in Gole Market for renewing the licence of his shop.

The CBI had caught him red-handed while demanding and accepting the bribe at Palika Kendra, the NDMC headquarters. The investigating agency had laid a trap to arrest him on the basis of a complaint by the son of the shop owner.

The telephone conversation between the accused and the complainant confirmed the allegation that he was demanding a bribe of Rs.10,000 from the shop owner.

As the investigating agency laid the trap, the officer demanded the bribe amount from the complainant by opening the drawer of his table. As the drawer was not within the reach of the complainant, the complaint put the money between the two file stakes, and the accused immediately covered it with a paper.

Thereafter, the CBI caught the accused red-handed and the bribe amount was recovered from him, the charge-sheet said. The forensic laboratory gave a positive report regarding handing over of the bribe amount and the recorded voice. “In the light of evidence on record, I am of the opinion that the prosecution has succeeded in proving offence under Sections 7 & 13(1) (d) of Prevention of Corruption Act beyond reasonable against accused Arjun Singh. Accused Arjun Singh is accordingly convicted,” the Judge said while holding the accused guilty.
