The mystery behind the discovery of the headless body of a woman stuffed inside a sack in Sarai Rohilla here this past weekend has been unravelled with the North Delhi Police on Thursday arresting the victim's live-in partner along with his two friends on the charge of murdering her.

Prime accused Yogesh Sharma, whose initials were tattooed on the right hand of the victim, was in a live-in relationship with the victim, identified as Pooja, for over two years, but wanted to get rid of her of late as she had been pressing for marriage, the police said.

“Pooja had conceived and wanted Yogesh to marry her. He persuaded her into aborting the pregnancy, but also decided to get rid of her. He also suspected her of infidelity and hatched a conspiracy with two of his friends to eliminate her. On March 16, Yogesh along with Ajay and Vinay strangulated Pooja, cut the body into eight pieces and dumped it on roadside in a sack,” said a senior police officer.

The accused burnt the head with a thinner and disposed it of in the drain a stone's throw from where the body was dumped. The chopper used in cutting the body and the scooter used in disposing of the body have been seized, the police said.

The gruesome murder had come to light on March 17 when a police team spotted the bag by the roadside and found the mutilated body inside.

Besides some blood-stained clothes, the police had also found pieces of a torn photograph inside the sack. The pieces were put together and inquiries made, but it did not yield any results.

The breakthrough came on Wednesday when a police team which reached Shanti Nagar police post in the course of investigation into the case learnt that a man had come to the police post to make inquiries about a young woman who had gone missing. Further investigation revealed that the man, who had identified himself as Yogesh, was accompanied by the elder sister of the missing woman and did not appear keen on lodging a complaint. It pointed the needle of suspicion towards Yogesh.

Yogesh was arrested during a raid at his electric starters' factory in Mangolpuri and purportedly confessed to his involvement in the crime. Ajay and Vinay were arrested later.

Ajay is a labourer at Yogesh's factory. Vinay runs a small factory.
