A Delhi University freshers’ party organised by the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) at the Thyagaraj Stadium here on Friday went wrong when several students were not allowed to enter and were allegedly lathi-charged by the police. The event included a musical performance by Mohit Chauhan.
“The stadium has a capacity of around 4,000 but the NSUI issued passes to about 20,000 students whom they ferried to the venue in buses. There was a rush, students could not get inside and the police had to resort to lathi-charge,” alleged Rohit Chehel, the spokesperson of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
With the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections round the corner, allegations and counter-allegations have started. “In violation of the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations, the NSUI candidates used dozens of buses to take students to the venue. We demand that strict action be taken by the Election Committee of DUSU,” added Mr. Chehel.
Meanwhile, the All India Students’ Association was also quick to join issue.
“Battle-lines have been drawn. 50,000 students’ future is at stake because of the four-year undergraduate programme. The NSUI in the most brazen show of obscene money and muscle power had organised this fest, and the ABVP is abetting this by keeping quiet on the FYUP. The DUSU cannot remain a puppet of the administration. We have to make DUSU a platform of struggle against the FYUP,” said AISA’s Sandeep Kumar.
