To show solidarity with the people of Kashmir and help raise funds for rehabilitation and relief work, the German Embassy here will organise a concert for Kashmir — Ehsaas-e-Kashmir — on Tuesday evening.
Kashmiri musicians Bhajan Sopori and Abhay Sopori will perform along with their entourage at the residence of German Ambassador to India Michael Steiner from 6 p.m.
Speaking to the press about the concert, Mr. Steiner hoped their efforts will raise money to provide immediate and long term relief to rebuild the State. The effort is to raise Rs.1 crore to fund work being done by various non-government and other organisations on the ground.
The German Embassy has already made available Rs.25 lakh for basic healthcare in cooperation with German doctors, who are a part of an NGO that has been working in the area for a while.
The Ambassador added that at the concert he will announce various projects that the funds raised will be support and there will be a link on the Embassy website to update donors as to how the money is being spent.
Speaking about what to expect from the concert, Abhay Sopori said it will bring music from the Valley to the Delhi audience. The music will have Sufi elements mixed with a bit of folk.
Appealing to the people of Delhi to come out and support the people of Kashmir, he added: “People often feel all is well when after a natural calamity the focus of the media shifts away to other stories. We need to keep reminding people about the extent of the damage especially because winter is approaching and it will be very tough to those displaced to survive the cold.”
The German Embassy has set up a special bank account for those who wish to donate.
