Move to ensure livelihoods for street vendors

October 30, 2010 07:18 pm | Updated November 28, 2021 08:49 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

The National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI) -- a federation of street vendor organisations across the country -- will hold consultations with StreetNet International, a global alliance of street vendor and community-based organisations, unions and cooperatives, this Monday.

StreetNet International chief Pat Horn will arrive in India on Monday for consultations with NSAVI on the prevailing political and legal situation and the progress of NASVI's street vendor movement in India. NASVI acts as the nodal agency of StreetNet International for Asia.

The meeting will also deliberate on ways to firm up programmes for developing synergy with government institutions to ensure sustainable livelihoods for street vendors.

The consultation holds significance in the backdrop of the recent Supreme Court verdict ensuring the fundamental rights of vendors. NASVI had hailed the verdict and called for a comprehensive legislation for vendors on the lines of NREGA.

Ms. Horn will meet leading street-vendor activists and leaders of Delhi on November 2 to understand their problems and methods of organising. She is also scheduled to meet government officials and political leaders during her two-day stay in Delhi.
