Marijuana, a psychoactive drug, has become the most commonly used drug in the Capital. The drug is prepared from the cannabis plant and is also known by many other names including ganja. Though the drug is banned in India, enormous seizures by the Delhi Police over the last few years bears testimony to its rampant use.

The Delhi Police had seized over 5,000 kg of marijuana (ganja) in the last two years. In 2012, they had seized 1,895 kg from various sources while in 2013, a seizure of 3,110 kg was made.

According to police officers, ganja is the most smuggled drug. Recently, they had seized 291 kg of ganja from two people who had smuggled the drug from Andhra Pradesh.

The quantity of marijuana or ganja seized by the Delhi Police is much higher than all other drugs that they seized in the last two years. While 5,000 kg of ganja was seized in the last two years, the amount of smack seized was 143 kg, charas was 254 kg and opium 109 kg.
