Hundreds of passengers were left stranded at the airport and railway stations in the Capital on Tuesday morning as dense fog led to zero visibility.
According to officials, 19 flights were cancelled at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport and 79 trains were running late. Railway officials said 10 trains had been rescheduled and six cancelled as of 7 a.m.
The director of the Meteorological Office at IGI, Dr.R.K. Jenamani, said the fog on Tuesday morning was “10 per cent more” than that seen on Monday.
“The new runway at IGI was shut from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. due to zero visibility. The old runway was working, but services were greatly reduced,” said Dr. Jenamani.
However, visibility returned to normal around 10 a.m. Dr. Jenamani added that Easterly winds coming in from the coast of Tamil Nadu will clear the fog in the next 24 hours and lead to cloud formation on New Year’s Eve.
Meanwhile, the minimum temperature in Delhi increased from Monday’s 2.6 degree Celsius to 4.5 degrees while the maximum was about 21 degrees.
