Expressing confidence that commissioning of more and more foot over bridges would not only improve pedestrian safety and overcome accidents on roads, but that they would also help the aged and the infirm cross busy roads with consummate ease, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Saturday said the Government would be constructing more FOBs across the Captial city.
Speaking at the inauguration of a foot over bridge across the Prem Bari Underpass on Ring Road in North West Delhi, the Chief Minister said the Government is trying to provide FOBs that are both aesthetically appealing and comfortable for the users. The new FOB, which is the 51{+s}{+t} to come up in Delhi, has lifts on both the sides along with the staircases.
Ms. Dikshit said the 44-metre-long FOB has been constructed at a cost of Rs.4.30 crore and its design was both unique and pragmatic.
Accompanied by Delhi PWD Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan and area MLA Anil Bhardwaj besides Principal Secretary (PWD) K.K. Sharma and Chief Engineer (PWD) R.P. Mathur, the Chief Minister said the Delhi Government is trying to provide a number of modern amenities in the city and the commissioning of a number of FOBs with escalators by the PWD was a step in that direction.
The new FOB has been constructed close to Wazipur Bus Depot and Punjab Kesri office. Its location is strategic as it connects Netaji Subhash Place Metro Station on one side to Transport Authority, DTC Bus Depot and Punjab Kesri office on the other side. Because of this, the new FOB would also help commuters shift from the Delhi Metro system to DTC and vice versa.
Mr Chauhan said the FOB has been constructed with elevators on both sides to facilitate the movement of senior citizens and differently-abled people. The construction of 25 more FOBs was in progress, he said, adding that with their being commissioned the traffic congestion in many parts of the city will become a thing of the past.
