Heavy rain lashed the city for close to two hours on Monday evening, bringing life to a standstill as heavy water-logging reduced traffic to a crawl and people were left stranded on street sideways.
“Around 28.6 mm of rainfall was recorded by about 8-30p.m.,” said the India Meteorological Department duty officer, adding that more rain was expected on Tuesday. Monday morning began with high temperatures and humidity and it got worse as the day progressed into afternoon with humidity levels touching a high of 83 per cent, the minimum also being on the higher side at 65 per cent.
While the rain brought with it respite from the heat, it also brought with it a slew of problems. Slow traffic was the norm everywhere in the city though the traffic police issued advisories asking citizens to avoid the routes from Raj Ghat to Shanti Van which reported heavy water-logging. Among the worst hit areas was the Outer Circle of Connaught Place, which remained jam-packed during the rush hour, due to water-logging.
The sudden deluge inconvenienced several citizens, many of them office-goers. “I decided to take a break from office in the evening and went to nearby Janpath. As soon as I got there, it started raining and I was stranded there for close to an hour waiting for an auto rickshaw,” said Vijay, who works in Connaught Place.
Many other parts of the city including ITO, Ashram, National Highway 8 and Mukherjee Nagar also reported heavy water-logging and traffic snarls.
