Fatima Nafees, the mother of missing JNU student Najeeb Ahmed, and some other students were detained by the Delhi Police on Monday while staging a protest outside the High Court. Ms. Nafees suffered minor injuries after which she was taken to a hospital for treatment, the protesting students said.
Former JNUSU president Akbar Chaudhary, who was with Ms. Nafees, said that around 2 p.m., all of them stepped out of the court and were talking to the media when the police officers stationed there allegedly manhandled and misbehaved with them.
Recalling the day in the first week of November, 2016, Mr. Chaudhary said that history repeated itself. “Last year, around the same time, Ammi was detained along with all of us and she was pushed around the same way this time,” he said.
Sloganeering
The students said that around 20 of them were standing outside Gate No. 5 and addressing the media when the police disrupted them.
“We were standing and some sloganeering started after which a police officer came and told us that ‘This is not the only case that demands attention’,” alleged Mr. Chaudhary.
While the police said that the students were trying to enter the court premises from Gate No. 5, Mr. Chaudhary denied the allegations.
While the students were taken to Barakhamba Road police station, Ms. Nafees and a female student were taken to Tilak Marg police station. “The woman’s kurta got torn when she was pushed into the police van ,” he alleged.
They were all let off around 5.30 p.m. allegedly after CPI leader D. Raja came to the police station.
Waited for advocates
Mr. Singh claimed that Ms. Nafees was asked to leave the police station immediately but she decided to stay. “She was informed that she was free to go. However, she she stayed back intentionally at the police station till her advocates arrived,” he said.
Several students and activists from across campuses gathered for a protest outside the CBI headquarters in the Capital on Friday as well to demand speedy investigation into the disappearance of Najeeb.
