In an effort to make the Capital a cleaner and greener city, Delhi Health and Family Welfare Minister Kiran Walia launched a ‘cleanliness drive' on Saturday. The drive is being carried out in partnership with ‘Let's do it Delhi' foundation'.
As part of the campaign, the group held a cleanliness drive at Metro Station Mayur Vihar I along with a large number of residents of the area.
Several corporate houses -- including Genpact, ICICI, KPMG, WIPRO, SC-Johnsons, Smartcube, Nescom foundation, Jindal Steel, Fab India, Punjab National Bank and Mahindra -- and a number of Resident Welfare Associations have joined the initiative.
The group took a pledge to make Delhi a clean, green and beautiful city. A street play was also staged to motivate the people to keep their houses and surroundings clean and garbage-free. About five tons of garbage was removed by a large number of people from around Sahyog and Anand Lok Apartments as part of the drive.
Engineers of different wings of Municipal Corporation of Delhi, New Delhi Municipal Council and representatives of RWAs of the area also participated in the event.
Prof. Walia distributed garbage bags and gloves to the participants. Addressing them, she said: “The Capital has developed enormously and has been given the shape of a world-class city with its flyovers, subways, foot over-bridges with escalators, widened roads, beautiful plantation at roadsides and at central verge and stadia, bus queue-shelters and Metro rail. Now it is the responsibility of the every citizen to maintain this well-developed infrastructure by ensuring that it remains clean and green. We ourselves have to take the initiative to keep the city clean and also teach others to change their habits and perspective.”
The Minister also called upon the people to develop greater civic sense and work towards keeping their city clean, green and environment-friendly. “Let us take a pledge not to litter around our houses, not to drop garbage at public places, not to spit here and there, not to throw garbage from running vehicles, to drop garbage only in dustbins and dhalaos, to keep our historical places and heritage buildings clean, and not to waste water, respect the elderly people and women and to keep environment clean. Only by taking such a pledge and rendering our duties towards being a good citizen can we make Delhi a better, beautiful and world-class city,” said the Minister.
