Every commuter who chooses the Delhi Metro over a car or a bus contributes in reduction in emission of roughly 100 mg of carbon dioxide for every trip of 10 kilometres. Noting the contribution made by metro commuters to reduce global warming, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), that has funded the Delhi Metro, has urged every citizen who has not taken the metro yet to do so on World Environment Day and contribute directly towards saving the environment.
The Delhi Metro has helped remove 1.2 lakh vehicles from city roads daily and has cut 1.06 lakh tonnes of fuel consumption annually. “Delhi Metro has greatly contributed towards alleviating overcrowding on the roads and sufferings of daily commuters of the city. It has led to reduction of large number of vehicles on the roads, thus positively contributing towards reducing pollution,” said a JICA statement.
Further, the Delhi Metro has saved Rs.1.4 crore in fuel costs daily and has reduced green house gas emission by 6.3 lakh tonnes annually.
It has also been certified by the United Nations as the first metro system in the world which will get carbon credits for reducing emission of harmful gases and thus curbing global warming.
