Municipal Corporation of Delhi Commissioner K. S. Mehra has issued directions for release of Rs.40,000 each before Diwali as arrears to the recently regularised safai karamcharis and Rs.2,500 each to those who worked during the Commonwealth Games.

The Municipal Commissioner took these decisions at a meeting with representatives of the All India Safai Majdoor Congress here on Friday. Additional Commissioners and senior Municipal Corporation of Delhi officials were also present.

Earlier, the karamcharis were mulling over going on strike from Friday to press their demands. Apart from regularisation, the karamcharis were demanding bonus equivalent to what is paid to workers in the New Delhi Municipal Council and the Public Works Department. They were also demanding that in case of death of any existing employee, his kin should be given a regular job in the MCD.

Some worker had also sat on a hunger strike over the issue.

At a recent meeting it was decided that the MCD would start regularising safai karamcharis appointed on compassionate ground. Also, the Commissioner directed that buffalo-cart drivers be regularised at par with safai karamcharis.
