The Delhi High Court on Thursday restrained the Municipal Corporation of Delhi from sealing illegal mobile phone towers in the Capital till May 19.
Justice Kailash Gambhir passed the restraint order on a petition by the Cellular Operators' Association of India against the sealing drive launched by the civic body on May 12 following expiry of the deadline for submission of forms for regularisation of the towers by the operators.
The Court also issued a notice to the civic body on the petition.
“Illegal towers”
The phone operators have installed about 5,360 mobile towers in the civic body's area. Of these, only 2,410 have been installed after taking permission. The rest are illegal, the civic body claims.
The MCD had recently announced a new policy for installation of mobile phone towers on rooftops and on the ground. A copy of the policy has been sent to the Cellular Operators' Association and the Association of Unified Telecom Service Providers of India for their opinion.
