Five young men, including a management post-graduate, have been arrested by the Crime Branch of Delhi Police for alleged involvement in over 50 cases of robbery, snatching and motor-vehicle thefts. While three stolen motorcycles were recovered, a semi-automatic and two country-made pistols were purportedly seized from them.
The Inter-State Cell of the Crime Branch received a tip-off that some members of a gang would pass through Geeta Colony on stolen motorcycles on March 26.
A team under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner of Police Rajender Bakshi laid a trap and intercepted the suspects, identified as Manoj Kejriwal, Praveen Shankar and Rahul Anand. They were arrested after the police allegedly seized three pistols and live cartridges from them. At their instance, the police arrested the other two accused, Hari Om and Mahesh Kumar, on March 28.
During interrogation, the accused disclosed that they had robbed a Hindi national daily reporter of his motorcycle, mobile phone, gold chain and other belongings at Kalyanpuri on March 6.
On March 20, the gang had struck at Rajinder Park in neighbouring Gurgaon and robbed a woman of her gold jewellery, two mobiles and a purse.
According to the police, Praveen Shankar and Rahul Anand remained in Patna jail for two years in a robbery case and both were previously involved in several cases in Patna. The police said Praveen is a management post-graduate from a Pune-based reputed institution. While Manoj is a graduate from Ranchi University, Rahul is a dropout from Patna University.
The accused have committed robberies and thefts at Kalyanpuri, Kapashera, Palam Vihar, Udyog Vihar and other parts of the National Capital Region, the police said.
