Many Delhi areas go powerless for long hours

October 12, 2011 11:04 am | Updated 11:06 am IST - NEW DELHI:

There was no let up from power cuts for the Capital on Tuesday as the generation continued to remain insufficient to meet the demand. Several areas across the city complained of power cuts for up to six hours.

Residents of Dwarka, Mayur Vihar, Nizamuddin, Okhla, Greater Kailash, Patparganj and Janakpuri reported power cuts several times a day. “There were three power cuts of about 1.5 hours each. The situation has been like this for the past several days now,” complained Aishwarya Pillai, a resident of Sector 6 in Dwarka.

In Jungpura too, power outages were reported several times on Tuesday. “The cuts began at about 11 a.m., and through the day we have had load shedding for an hour at various intervals,” said Jungpura Extension resident Namita Kumar.

Grid indiscipline

Power department officials continued to blame grid indiscipline for the cuts and said the situation is likely to ease off in the next couple of days.

“We are requesting other States to not cause disruption in supply by indiscriminate overdrawal. The NTPC too has been asked to improve its generation, and the situation is expected to improve in the next few days,” said an official.

On Tuesday, the shortfall was about 1,000 MW from various power stations, including NTPC's Dadri (Uttar Pradesh), Singrauli (Madhya Pradesh), Farakka (West Bengal) and Kahalgaon (Bihar) power plants.

The Delhi Government on Monday had requested the NTPC to ensure supply of full quota of power to Delhi while directing all discoms to try and procure power from open market even at higher rates.

On Tuesday, the peak demand for power was 3520 MW at 7.19 p.m., while the city's total generation was 965 MW.
