With Tihar Jail running beyond capacity, the Delhi Government is targeting to operationalise the under-construction Mandoli jail complex by year-end. Against a sanctioned capacity of 6,000 prisoners, around 12,000 prisoners are currently lodged in Tihar Jail.
In order to decongest the Central Jail, the government plans to open new jails at Mandoli, Baprola and Narela. Chief Secretary D.M. Spolia, along with senior Delhi Government officials, inspected the ongoing construction work of Mandoli Jail complex on Sunday.
Mr. Spolia asked Public Works Department officials to speed up the work, besides stating them that he would review the work after a month.
“For opening a new jail in Baprola, land will be acquired in correspondence with the Land and Building Department. For construction of a jail at Narela, the land has been acquired in village Tikri Khurd and the payment has been made. The construction work will start soon after completing the necessary formalities,” Mr. Spolia said.
The upcoming Mandoli jail, spread over 68 acres, would have six jails in its sprawling complex with provision for keeping high security prisoners. It will have a capacity of 3,750 prisoners.
During inspection, the Chief Secretary was informed by DG (Prisons) Alok Verma that the matter has been taken up with Chairman (DSSSB) for early recruitment of 747 posts of different categories requisitioned for jail administration.
