A 25-year-old was shot dead near his residence in east Delhi’s Seelampur on Sunday night. The police said they suspect the victim Rashid Khan— who is married to two women — was killed over an illicit relationship with his friend’s wife. No arrest has been made so far, said the police.

After a hectic day of MCD polls Khan, a resident of Buland Masjid in Shastri Nagar, was relaxing with a couple of neighbours outside his house when the incident took place. “Around 9 p.m., he went to the tea shop opposite our house. He was taken to the side by his friend where he was shot,” Rashid’s sister-in-law Hina Khan told The Hindu . She also said that he was seen talking on someone else’s phone while walking alongside the said person.

Another witness, Mohd Haneef (60) who resides next door, said that he saw Rashid as he was going inside his house only to come back after hearing the gun shot. “I saw a white car on our street with a few men in white clothes. They didn’t look familiar but I ignored it. Ten minutes later, I came down and saw his body and the men and the car were gone,” he said. After getting shot, Rashid was taken to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital by his brother Zahid Khan (35), a Congress party worker, where he was declared brought dead on arrival.

Couple of men detained

The police said that they have begun investigating and that it looks like a crime of passion. “From preliminary investigation, it looks like he was shot because of his illicit relationship with a friend’s wife,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-East) Ajit Kumar Singla, adding that they have detained a couple of men for questioning and are likely to make arrests.

Rashid is survived by two wives and four-year-old daughter Ayat.

He owned four buffaloes and used to sell their milk to earn a living.

‘No enmity’

His first wife Sofia Khan (21), to whom he was married for five years, told The Hindu that he hadn’t told her anything about rivalry or enmity with anyone. “He was at home all day. He never told me he about troubles with anyone,” she said as she broke down, adding that “he was a nice man”. Second wife Shabana Khan (19), who is six months pregnant, said: “He had issues with his first wife. We fell in love and got married in July last year. I can’t believe someone killed him.”

The police have registered a case under section 302 (punishment for murder) and are exploring all the angles to nab the accused. The body was handed over to the family after post-mortem on Monday afternoon.
