A woman is battling for life after her 32-year-old estranged husband allegedly stabbed her multiple times before jumping to his death from the fourth floor of a building in Rohini here on Saturday.

Jaswinder got married to Heena five years ago. They have a daughter. The couple has filed for divorce but the fights continued even after the separation.

The immediate trigger is said to be Ms. Heena’s displeasure over Mr. Jaswinder making their daughter stay with his family longer than scheduled. According to a court order, he could only meet the child on weekends.

The incident happened in Pocket B of Rohini Sector 16, where Ms. Heena lives with her siblings. Around midnight, the police received a call stating that a man had attacked his wife with a knife before jumping from the fourth floor.

Critical injuries

A police officer said Mr. Jaswinder fell on a car and then on the ground, sustaining critical injuries. The police took the husband and wife to Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital, where Mr. Jaswinder was declared brought dead. Ms. Heena is still undergoing treatment.

Screams heard

The neighbours purportedly told the police that they heard the woman scream that her husband had attacked her and would also kill their daughter.

Investigations revealed that as per the court-ordered arrangement, Mr. Jaswinder had taken the child to his house in Jahangirpuri after telling Ms. Heena that his mother was keen to meet her granddaughter.

Multiple calls

However they failed to return till late evening and Ms. Heena’s multiple calls went unanswered.

When he showed up late at night, Ms. Heena questioned the delay. This led to an argument between them, said the police, adding that it soon turned ugly and he allegedly attacked her.

‘Had lost his job’

The police said Mr. Jaswinder used to work as a salesman but lost his job recently. Ms. Heena’s family alleged that he became an alcoholic, leading to frequent fights.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini) Rishi Pal said the incident took place in front of the woman’s 13-year-old brother and her adult sister. “He used a small knife to attack her. We have registered a case of attempt to murder,” he said.
