A 45-year-old man was shot dead in front of his wife and their three-year-old daughter after they resisted a robbery bid in east Delhi's Harsh Vihar on Tuesday night. No arrest has been made so far.

Returning from wedding

The family was on its way home on a motorcycle after attending a marriage function when they were allegedly stopped by the robber, said the police. A senior police officer said that the victim, Shahadra resident Ompal, his wife Babita and daughter Bhumika were returning from neighbouring Ghaziabad when the incident took place.

“He was another biker who overtook the family when they reached an isolated stretch in Pratap Nagar. The suspect signalled them to stop and then threatened them by taking out a pistol. He demanded that they hand over the money they were carrying,” said the officer.

Sketch in the works

Ompal resisted the robbbery bid following which the suspect shot him. The bullet hit Ompal's chest even as his wife, a witness to the crime, screamed for help. Hearing the screams, some passers by helped her rush the victim to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital where Ompal was declared brought dead. He is survived by four daughters and a son.

A case of murder was registered at the Harsh Vihar police station. The police are also looking at CCTV footage to prepare a sketch of the suspect.
