A 50-year-old CRPF officer in an inebriated condition allegedly opened fire using his service revolver around 10 p.m. on Monday at Thakuran Mohalla of Dadri and shot dead a 45-year-old neighbour.

Weapon seized

The police have arrested Satish Chetrapal, who has been sent to judicial custody, and seized the weapon. A senior officer said Mr. Chetrapal, who is posted in Chhattisgarh, had come home on vacation on Monday evening and opened fire several times after consuming liquor.

His neighbour Baldev, a shopkeeper, lived in the same building and there was no bad blood between their families.

“I was watching TV at night when I heard firing. Initially I assumed some locals were bursting crackers on the occasion of Id. Mr. Baldev went to see what was happening and saw Mr. Chetrapal firing. He urged him not to fire in the densely-populated area,” said Rajesh Kumar, a local resident.

Locals raise alarm

Initially, Mr. Baldev managed to convince the accused and took him to his house. “I was standing in the balcony. Mr. Baldev managed to pacify him. All of a sudden, Mr. Chetrapal pushed him and shot him at close range,” he said.

The locals raised an alarm and nabbed Mr. Chetrapal.
