A 28-year-old kingpin of a gang has been arrested for allegedly posing as cab driver and robbing passengers. Praveen is a resident of Khungai village in Jhajjar.

Delhi victims

The police claimed the gang was involved in more than half-a-dozen cases and had sexually abused at least three of their victims.

According to the police, Praveen and two of his two gang members would pick up passengers from IFFCO Chowk or Shankar Chowk, drive them to Delhi and rob them at gunpoint.

Acting on a tip-off, a team led by Crime Branch, West, Sector 10, incharge inspector Jaibir Singh, arrested Praveen on Monday. His accomplice, however, managed to escape. During interrogation, he purportedly confessed to having sexually abused at least three of his victims along with his gang.

Mr. Singh said the gang had been operating for the past six months and three of their victims belonged to Delhi. The accused usually drove their victims to isolated places in Bijwasan or Dwarka in Delhi and robbed them at gunpoint.

“The accused also beat their victims to obtain the PIN for their debit cards and withdrew money,” said Mr. Singh, adding that the accused mostly looked for single passengers. Praveen was arrested in connection with a case of robbery and sodomy registered at Gurugram’s Sector 18 police station on August 21.

The victim, a resident of Dwarka, had boarded the accused’s sedan near IFFCO Chowk around 9.30 p.m. on August 20 for Delhi. The accused withdrew ₹62,000 from the victim’s account using two ATM cards and also took away his mobile phone, and his gold and silver rings, the police said.

Man sodomised

The victim was blindfolded, tied up and sodomised in the moving car. The police claimed to have seized a country-made pistol and recovered the stolen mobile phone and cash. One of the gang members is already in jail in connection with a different case, said Mr. Singh.

Praveen was produced before a local court on Thursday after his two-day police remand and was sent to jail.
