Iqbal was arrested with the guns near Sangam Vihar on Monday evening.

An alleged gunrunner has been arrested in south Delhi and 14 pistols recovered from his possession, the Delhi Police said on Thursday.

While tracking suppliers of illegal arms in Delhi and the National Capital Region, a police team came to know about one Iqbal.

He was arrested from M.B. Road near Sangam Vihar on Monday evening following a tip-off, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) Romil Baaniya.

“Iqbal was carrying 14 pistols of 0.32 bore in a bag. The arms were seized and a case was registered at the Sangam Vihar police station. Further probe is on,” Mr. Baaniya said.

During interrogation, Iqbal told the police that he came in contact with one Mufeed back home in his village in Mathura and started smuggling arms since the past one year.

Iqbal claimed he had been sent by Mufeed to deliver the pistols to a contact, the officer said, adding that he was paid ₹1,000 for each smuggled firearm.

Iqbal also visited Sendhwa in Madhya Pradesh on Mufeed’s instructions and bought guns from local contacts.

He made nearly 10 trips to smuggle guns and supplied them to criminals in Delhi-NCR, Mr. Baaniya added.
