A 20-year-old Delhi University student on February 10 lodged an FIR at Vasant Vihar police station against a man for allegedly masturbating while sitting next to her in a public bus.

The student has also uploaded a video of the incident, which happened on February 7, on Twitter. The woman claimed the bus was packed with passengers but no one came forward to help her. The accused walked away later when she screamed at him.

In her complaint, the woman said the incident happened around 3 p.m. on February 7 when she was returning home from college in a cluster bus plying on route number 774. The incident happened near Munirka and the accused got down at IIT gate bus stop.

‘No one helped’

She said she was reading a book when she felt the middle-aged man sitting next to her repeatedly trying to touch her waist with his elbow. “Initially, I did not realise what was happening. Later, I discovered that the man was masturbating. I recorded the act on my mobile phone before calling him out,” she said in her complaint

She added that she shouted at the man but did not get any help from other passengers. “It all happened in broad daylight inside a bus with 30 passengers. The man continued touching himself for about 10 minutes and later got down at his stop without any fear of the public,” she said.

“Disturbed over the incident, I told to my family about it. They were hesitant about filing a complaint but I uploaded the video on Twitter and tagged the Delhi Police, Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and other authorities. On February 10, I filed a police complaint at Vasant Vihar police station.”

Delhi Police spokesperson Dependra Pathak said an FIR under relevant section of the IPC has been registered in the case. “The photo of the suspect has been sent to all districts for identification. The accused will be arrested soon,” said Mr. Pathak.
