A 24-year-old man died in a suspected case of celebratory firing at a wedding ceremony here on Thursday evening.

Bhanu Pratap, a mechanic in Welcome, was working in his shop at the time of the incident.

According to the police, the gun was fired by some youths who were allegedly in an inebriated condition. They fired from inside a car that was part of the wedding procession.

“One of the bullets hit Bhanu in the face and he collapsed on the spot. Two others, Shah Alam, and Raees, who were standing near the shop when the firing happened around 7 p.m., sustained injuries on the face. They are out of danger,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-East) A.K. Singla.

CCTV footage

“We identified the car from which the gun was fired with the help of a video recording of the marriage procession and CCTVs installed in the locality. The suspects are at large and will be nabbed soon,” added Mr. Singla.

The locals rushed all three victims to a hospital, where Bhanu was declared brought dead. The others are still undergoing treatment. The locals also informed the police about the shooting.

Glass shards

A team reached the crime spot and found glass shards from the car window.

“Investigations revealed that shots were fired from inside a car. There was a group of men and women inside the vehicle. We were initially told that the car used in the crime was a blue hatchback,” said Mr. Singla.

However, the police discovered that its windows were intact.

“The owner of the blue hatchback told us that shots were fired from the car in front of him. Local enquiry confirmed that the car was part of the wedding procession,” added the officer.
