A 50-year-old man committed suicide by jumping in front of a metro train at Yellow Line’s Azadpur station on Monday.
The victim was identified as Ishwar Prasad Sharma, a resident of Model Town. The police said he was last seen waiting at the platform around 8 a.m.
Metro and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel rushed the victim to a hospital, but he was declared dead on arrival.
A suicide note recovered from the body hinted at a tiff with the owner of the gas company where the deceased had been working as a supervisor for over 10 years. His family, too, confirmed this.
‘Victim tortured’
Raj Kamal, the victim’s relative, said he was “mentally tortured” by the owner of the gas agency. Sharma was also struggling with the management to get his salary for the last two months, Mr. Kamal said.
“He was a simple man who who used to keep all his sorrows to himself so that his family was not affected. I wish he had spoken to someone. Maybe, we would have helped him,” Mr. Kamal said.
Santosh Singh, a neighbour and a colleague of Sharma, however, said he did not see any reason why Sharma would kill himself.
“He was with the gas agency for a long time, but he did not have many friends. We will wait for the police to begin investigation instead of reaching any conclusion,” Mr. Singh said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Metro) Jitender Mani said they were yet to begin investigation into the case.
“The victim levied allegations against the gas agency’s owner, but did not specify any reason. We will take legal action against the firm after thorough investigation,” Mr. Mani said.
He added that a voter’s ID card was also recovered from the victim’s body.
Sharma is survived by his wife and three children, who were not available for comments.
Relatives informed
Mr. Kamal said their relatives living in Uttar Pradesh had been informed, and the funeral service would be conducted after they reached the city on Tuesday.
“We are yet to receive the body. We have been told that he was completely crushed under the wheels of the train,” Mr. Kamal said.
Meanwhile, operations on the Yellow Line were delayed for around 20 minutes after the incident, said a Delhi Metro Rail Corporation spokesperson.
