A 45-year-old man sustained injuries after a parcel delivered to him exploded under mysterious circumstances at his residence in Shaheen Bagh here on Monday.
The police received a call around 4 p.m. informing that a person was injured after a parcel bomb exploded in his house. He was rushed to the JPN Apex Trauma Centre of All-India Institute of Medical Sciences where he is now stated to be out of danger. He was identified as Mohammad Uzair.
Enquiries by the police revealed that the mysterious parcel kept in a polythene bag was delivered to a relative of Uzair outside his house around 3-45 p.m. The person who came with the packet claimed that he was from Laxmi Nagar in East Delhi and that the parcel had been sent for Uzair by one of his relatives in Saudi Arabia.
As Uzair opened the parcel, a low-intensity bomb kept inside the box exploded, injuring him in the hand, eyes and stomach.
Dr. Sanjeev Bhoi of the Trauma Centre (Emergency Medicine) said the victim was brought to the emergency ward at 4-50 p.m. He was conscious, oriented and did not have any life-threatening injury. He sustained injuries in the fingers and some “foreign bodies” were found in his eyes, suggesting that they could be splinters. He had also received superficial injuries in the stomach. He is being kept under observation for 48 hours to ensure that his condition does not deteriorate.
The police have registered a case and are trying to identify the person who sent the parcel bomb to target Uzair. “Prima Facie it appears to be a case of personal enmity. We are trying to gather information about the victim. If necessary, his relatives, friends and acquaintances will be questioned. Uzair's statement may lead to a breakthrough,” said a police officer.
He works with a manpower company on a temporary basis and is also a building contractor.
Samples of the remains of the bomb have been collected and sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory for analysis. “The forensic report may reveal how the bomb was configured,” said the police officer.
