: A 28-year-old man—driving with the body of a woman and a firearm kept in his car— was held by the police in North Delhi’s Civil Lines on Tuesday night. The two were reportedly in a relationship before the man got married.

While the police suspect that the detained man, Naveen, killed Anjali, he has purportedly claimed that she shot herself.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Madhur Verma said Naveen had described the incident (of Anjali having shot herself at the Ridge forest) to a relative who informed the police control room and also provided Naveen’s phone number.

The police then called Naveen and asked him to surrender and he obliged. The vehicle, a Ford Eco Sports, was stopped at a police picket near Hindu College in Civil Lines. A pistol and an empty shell were also found in the car. “Preliminary investigation suggests that the two were in the car outside the Bonta Park when a gunshot was heard from inside,” said another police officer. Sources added that Naveen had been driving with the body in the passenger seat of the car for more than half an hour when he was stopped.

He and Anjali were in a relationship for the past seven years. Naveen got married recently, which soured relations between the two. Anjali, too, was married and has two children. Naveen is a resident of Chandan Nagar in Tri Nagar, while the woman lived in Sector 24, Rohini, said the police.
