A 23-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly setting his wife ablaze suspecting her of having an extra-marital affair with his cousin. The victim sustained serious burns.

The incident came to light when one of the neighbours of the victim made a call to the Police Control Room (PCR) on January 19 around 8 p.m. saying that a woman had been set afire by her husband at Sanjay Colony in Fathepur Beri. When Station House Officer (Fathepur Beri) Inspector Anil Sharma reached the spot along with his staff, he found that a woman had been set afire allegedly by her husband Jeetu and that she was taken to All-India Institute of Medical Sciences by a PCR vehicle.

The victim was unconscious when admitted to the hospital and was diagnosed with 50 per cent burns.

As the husband of the victim was absconding, the matter was reported to the Hauz Khas Sub-Divisional Magistrate.

Later, the woman in her statement to the SDM said her husband Jeetu returned home in an inebriated state along with his cousin Arvind on the fateful day and accused her of having an extra-marital affair with Arvind. It led to an altercation between Jeetu and and his wife and the former allegedly beat her up. She then passed out. A little later, Jeetu allegedly poured kerosene on her and set her ablaze.

Hearing her screams, some of her neighbours rushed to her help and rescued her.

Taking up investigation, the police carried out raids at several places in search of Jeetu and questioned his relatives and arrested Jeetu from Manesar in Haryana.
