A post-graduate man, based in Delhi, has been arrested by the Food and Drug Administration and Health Department, Haryana, for allegedly selling sex determination kits, which is illegal and punishable offence under the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act in India.
According to Health Department (Haryana) Secretary and Commissioner of Food and Drug Administration Rakesh Gupta, the accused, Sanjay Khatana, attracted couples desiring to have a male child through a website- www.babygenderchoose.com. After obtaining money from them, the kit was couriered. Sanjay, who runs an office from Bristol at Lawrence Road in Delhi, sold a kit for Rs.6,000.
A three-member team was constituted to nab the accused . A decoy customer Gunjan Malhotra called the accused to Khandsa Road, Gurgaon for delivering two kits.
Accordingly, the accused came and he was handed over Rs.12,000 for two kits. Deputy Civil Surgeon Saryu Sharma, who posed as a private practitioner, had put her signatures on four currency notes. She told the accused that Ms. Malhotra has three daughters and she wanted a boy this time. The accused described the procedure to take the medicine and assured that he had given these kits to about 60-70 couples in Punjab and Haryana and had not received any complaint. A FIR has been lodged under IPC and PNDT Act in City police station, Gurgaon.
