A 26-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly murdering his wife in Shakti Vihar here suspecting her of having an extra-marital affair.

The murder came to light on October 20 when the victim's landlord found her room locked from outside and a blood trail under the door. He then made a call to the Police Control Room. On reaching the spot, the police broke open the door and found a woman, in his 20s, lying in a pool of blood. Her face was covered with a blood-soaked sheet and there were cut marks on the neck and cheeks. The landlord told the police that the woman had been staying in the room with another woman and a man for the past 10 days. But he could not provide any details of the victim and her room partners.

Carrying out search in the room, the police found a piece of paper with the contact number of one of the relatives of the victim on it. The victim was then identified as Sheetal. Further investigation revealed that she was married to Ashwani, a resident of Sanjay Camp in Chanakyapuri, for the past four years. Ashwani, who was absconding, was arrested at Satya Niketan and purportedly confessed to having murdered her.

The story emerged that Ashwani, a waiter, fell in love with Sheetal, whose father runs a bangle shop near Hanuman Mandir in Connaught Place, and the two got married. They began to live at Sanjay Camp in Chanakyapuri, but the relation between them soured as Ashwani suspected her of having an extra-marital affair. Meanwhile, Ashwani married one Neha and left Sanjay Camp to stay in Shakti Vihar. When Sheetal got to know about it, she also came over to Shakti Vihar to stay with them.

A day before the murder, Ashwani and Sheetal had a heated argument over some issue and he decided to eliminate her.

As per the plan, Ashwani asked Neha to leave the house on some pretext on October 19 night and allegedly strangulated Sheetal. He then slit her throat and cheeks with a kitchen knife and fled.
