Man held for Harare rape not cricketer: MEA

June 20, 2016 07:30 am | Updated October 18, 2016 02:04 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Sunday said reports of the arrest of an Indian cricket player in Zimbabwe’s capital Harare are false.

The MEA said an Indian national, “affiliated with one of the sponsors” of the visiting team has been arrested while the Zimbabwean authorities claimed two Indians had been arrested.

R. Masakui, India’s ambassador to Zimbabwe told the media: “This is an unfortunate incident. However, this is to clarify that no cricketer is involved [in the alleged rape]. The Indian Embassy in Harare is following up the case and will inform the government of the developments.”

Early reports in the Zimbabwean media said a member of the Indian cricket team was arrested for allegedly raping a Zimbabwean woman at the Meikles Hotel in Central Harare, where the visiting players had been staying.
