A 28-year-old man was arrested for allegedly duping several people at ATMs across east Delhi and stealing their money fraudulently. With the accused’s arrest, the police claim to have solved three cases of cheating.
Sandeep, resident of Jawala Nagar and native of Punjab, was apprehended from Shahdara’s Anaj Mandi ATM after a guard Pradeep Kumar, who had enrolled in ‘Eyes and Ears’ scheme, informed the police. Mr. Kumar had seen his pictures which were shared by the police after a man had filed a complaint against him on charges of cheating on September 4.
A hotel management graduate, Sandeep used to cheat people at ATMs especially with two money dispensers by lying to them that one of the machines is not working.
Explaining his modus operandi, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Nupur Prasad said that the accused would enter the ATM after identifying his victim. He would tell the person that the machine they are trying to dispense the money from was not working, after the target had punched in the card details. When the victim would go on to operate another machine, the accused would flee away with the money dispensed from the first machine.
