In what may be a case of gang war, a 30-year-old man was shot dead near V3S Mall in east Delhi’s Nirman Vihar early on Friday.

Betting racket

The victim, Vishal Suri, had gone to an eatery when a group of three to four men attacked him.

Vishal himself had a criminal record and was involved in cases of murder and robbery, said the police.

According to the police, the victim and the main accused — Nishant alias Noni — are members of rival gangs who run an illegal betting business in Geeta Colony.

7 to 8 rounds fired

According to the police, the incident happened around 2 a.m. when two of Vishal’s friends had parked their Swift Dzire car along the roadside and gone to an eatery near the mall.

“Vishal was in the car when a group of three to four men came in another vehicle and fired at him,” said a senior police officer.

He added that a total of seven to eight rounds of bullets were fired, three of which hit Vishal.

Even as he collapsed, his friends reportedly fired back at the assailants.

The police, however, are yet to confirm this.

“We are looking into whether Vishal and his friends fired. We suspect that a member of the rival gang also suffered bullet injuries, after which they fled,” said the officer.

CCTV footage scanned

The police said that they were scanning CCTV footage from cameras installed at the V3S mall to establish the sequence of events.

Investigation also revealed that Vishal Suri, a resident of Shastri Nagar in Geeta Colony, had gone to Rani Bagh to threaten one Nishant (25).

According to the police, Vishal had been living with his relatives in Geeta Colony since his parents died.

He claimed to be a property dealer but was illegally running a betting racket, they said.
