Observing that “the child victim has been left to lead a life devoid of life,’’ a Delhi court has sentenced a man to 14 years in jail for sexually assaulting an 8-year-old child in 2014.The court also awarded a compensation of ₹3 lakh to the victim.

Accused Rajvinder Singh kidnapped the victim when she was playing outside her house, took her to his room and sexually assaulted her. Additional Sessions Judge Seema Maini convicted him on the basis of evidence provided by the victim, her parents and the forensic report.

“The testimony of prosecution witnesses are found to be trustworthy and reliable, and the prosecution has succeeded in proving that the accused confined the victim in his house and committed sexual assault on her,’’ the judge said while holding the accused guilty.

Plea rejected

The judge also rejected the leniency plea of the accused.

“The only mitigating factor in favour of the convict is that he is the breadwinner of his family, having four children to support and his wife having expired. However, the same cannot eclipse the stress, pain and trauma which the tender-aged victim and her family would have undergone, and would continue to undergo till the child is able to wipe out the traumatic memories of the incident from her mind. Therefore, the nature of offence, which has been committed by the convict, does not merit any leniency,” the judge said.

“The victim’s suffering at the hands of the convict cannot be expressed in words. She has been left to lead a life devoid of life. Such an offence makes it imperative that the offender is dealt with a firm hand,” the judge further said.
