A 40-year-old man was found dead at his residence in south-west Delhi’s Uttam Nagar on Tuesday evening.

While preliminary investigation showed that he died after a part of the cement roof fell on him, the family alleged he had been bludgeoned to death by the neighbours.

Deceased Vasant lived in a rented accommodation with his family on the second floor of the building.

Alone at home

He ran a grocery shop on the ground floor of the building, said the police.

The incident allegedly took place on Tuesday, when his family members were not at home.

Passerby calls police

A passerby noticed a foul smell and opened the door, only to find Vasant dead. He called the police immediately

When the police reached the spot, they found Vasant lying under a cement slab. Vasant was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was declared brought dead.

“When the crime scene was inspected, there were pieces of concrete lying around and Vasant’s body was under the cement slab. Prima facie it looks like the slab fell on him,” said a senior police officer.

The officer added that the family had alleged Vasant was bludgeoned to death because the two families didn’t get along well.

The police have registered a case and started an investigation.
